How does Johnstones Microbarr Anti-Bacterial Coatings work?
The key ingredient in Johnstone’s Microbarr is silver. Whilst many anti-bacterial wall coverings use chemicals to prevent bacterial growth, Microbarr uses silver ions which form part of the film and prevent bacteria from multiplying.
One of the issues with chemical based solutions is that as the paint is continually wiped down, the chemical content is gradually removed – reducing its effectiveness. The silver in Microbarr cannot be removed by wiping or washing.
The silver ions present within the coating attack bacteria in three different ways to cause the reproductive functions within the bacteria to break down, thus preventing bacterial growth.
Research has shown that silver ions are bactericidal against nearly 150 strains of bacteria. Also, as the silver has three modes of action rather than one, it is extremely unlikely that micro-organisms could develop resistance to it.
Testing. Unlike many similar anti-bacterial coatings, Johnstone’s Microbarr has been tested to incredibly stringent Japanese Industry standards*. These have proven that Johnstone’s Microbarr stops the spread of:
The Japanese JIS Z 2801 test method works by introducing live bacteria on to the coating and incubating it for 24 hours. The inocula are then washed off and the remaining live bacteria counted in order to determine the effectiveness of the coating. The tests exhibit the impressive rate of decline; 99.9% of bacteria are eradicated within 18 hours where Microbarr has been used, in comparison to slight reductions with standard coatings under the same, independent test conditions. *Based on Acrylic Matt and Acrylic Eggshell.
Where do I use it? Johnstone’s Microbarr Anti-Bacterial Coatings have been developed for use in areas where hygiene protection is required. Common usage will include wall and ceiling areas in establishments such as:
Johnstone’s Microbarr Anti-Bacterial Coatings have been developed to give excellent adhesion over suitably prepared wood, metal, wall and ceilings ensuring all substrates in an area can be covered. Johnstone’s Microbarr has been developed to be both tough and highly durable, which creates a seamless finish. All products in the Microbarr range contain a fungicide/algicide to inhibit algal and fungal growth which are damaging to coatings. Microbarr is therefore particularly suitable in environments subject to wear and tear, heavy traffic and condensation.
Johnstone’s Microbarr is tough, durable and proven to protect against over 150 strains of bacteria. Quite simply, wherever the highest standards of hygiene are required, Johnstone’s Microbarr, when used alongside regular cleaning procedures, provides the perfect solution.
