CHAS (The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) .

CHAS was created by experienced health and safety professionals in 1997 to improve health and safety standards across the UK.

In partnership with the Association of London Government (ALG), CHAS was a key developer of the core criteria held in the Approved Code of Practice which supported the Construction (Design andManagement) Regulations 2007 (now recognised as CDM 2015) and is a founder member of SSIP(Safety Schemes in Procurement). As one of the founders of third party accreditation we are not only a trusted advisor on health and safety compliance, we are an authority. We set industry benchmarks, provide assurance and reassurance, and offer best-in-class services that are easy to use and cost effective.

This health and safety legislation was created to achieve the following aims:

  • To simplify health and safety contractor assessment by standardising requirements.
  • To allow companies to avoid undergoing health and safety assessments for every job.

We have more than 1000 public and private sector client organisations and 35,000 contractors registered on the CHAS database.

CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on site. By ensuring that the workforce are appropriately qualified the card plays its part in improving standards and safety on UK construction sites.

Holding a CSCS card is not a legislative requirement. It is entirely up to the principal contractor orclient whether workers are required to hold a card before they are allowed on site. However, most principal contractors and major house builders require construction workers on their sites to hold a valid card.

CSCS is a not-for-profit limited company. Its directors are from employer organisations and unions representing the breadth of the industry. The Scheme’s application processing and contact centre is delivered under contract by CITB

ICATS is a comprehensive structured training scheme for the registration, training and certification of industrial surface preparation and coating operatives. The scheme contains ICA, Industrial Coating Applicator, Specialist Sprayer and Specialist Blaster modules.

Certification is awarded to candidates when they have successfully completed each individual course. Companies wishing to have a workforce certificated under ICATS must first register with Correx. Upon acceptance, registered companies are expected to initiate training of their workforce within 12 months.

Workplace training is carried out by ICATS certificated trainers who are qualified to train and assess operatives. Training is carried out inhouse and may be undertaken by a certificated trainer employed by an ICATS registered training organisation. However, it is more usual for registered companies to nominate experienced employees to ICATS for prior approval as company trainers. Subject to meeting the acceptance criteria, nominees attend a 2-day ICATS Company Trainer course held at various locations in the UK.

Successful completion of the ICATS course by operatives leads to certification by Correx. Trainers and operatives will require re-certification after 3 years and renewal after 9 years.
